Krill are shrimp-like invertebrates or crustaceans that live in large schools that can sometimes reach densities of 10,000-30,000 individual animals per cubic meter. Euphausia superba is a species of krill found in the Antarctic waters of the southern ocean and is a rich source of phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are absorbed and carried to the body’s cells in phospholipid form. Because phospholipids form the structural basis of cell membranes, omega-3 fatty acids with phospholipids are easily recognized, absorbed, and utilized by the body. Krill oil is 2.5x more bioavailable than fish oil in terms of bioavailaility, is more sustainable, and because of its lower dosage (500 mg to 1 g of krill oil vs. 1 g to 3 g of EPA + DHA from fish oil) and naturally occurring astaxanthin, krill oil is a much better value than fish oil.
